Wikimania 2008 Alexandria :: Change the shape of wisdom

"Accessibility"

What do you mean by that? Oh, you mean European and north American accessibility. Right. Maybe you want to state that assumption explicitly.

Hosting a conference in Australia is not even remotely equivalent to hosting one in Antarctica. Sorry it's just so far away down south, but lumping them together is not useful unless you really want to marginalise us further. I mean, if we should just stop wasting our time because we don't have a snowball's chance in hell, it would be nice to know that up-front. Really. If you're going to cut us off better to do it earlier than later.

I think talking about accessibility is a bit of a furphy, given that 1) only 500 people can attend, despite thousands of Wikimedians all over the world, and 2) half the attendees are locals who are usually not that familiar with Wikimedia anyway. So that leaves only 250-300 spaces for dedicated, world-wandering editors who have the flexibility and inclination to take time off from their job/studies to attend Wikimania (since most attendees only have Wikimedia as a hobby). Surely that restricted number makes an event far less accessible than an event held far away + a good scholarships program. --pfctdayelise 02:46, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
